This striking painting shows us figures trudging on, rendered in earthy browns and tans. I imagine Albin Egger-Lienz wrestling with his composition, pushing and pulling figures across the canvas, wiping away, and starting over. What was he thinking as he painted these determined, striding figures? The paint looks thinly applied, almost translucent in areas, giving a sense of something monumental, yet fragile. Look at the way the figure's weight is distributed, see how they are almost lugging that skeleton on their backs – the weight of the world, maybe? That grim detail reminds me of medieval Danse Macabre scenes, where Death leads everyone in a dance. But here, there's no dance, just a relentless march forward. It reminds me that artists are always in conversation with each other, borrowing ideas and reinventing them. The artist invites us to reflect on life, death, and our shared human burden. Each of us brings something unique, and yet the artist invites us into an ongoing dialogue.
