This is a bronze prize medal from 1900, designed by J.A.A. Gerritsen for the Dutch Hotelkeepers Association in Amsterdam. Its circular form is divided into two pictorial fields, each side presenting a distinct visual and symbolic language. One side depicts a female figure, possibly an allegorical representation of Amsterdam, alongside architectural elements that suggest the city. The composition on the other side features the inscription "Alb. Bocke," surrounded by stylized foliage. The medal employs a blend of classical and art nouveau motifs, reflecting the aesthetic tastes of the time. The contrast between the figurative and the ornamental highlights the medal's dual function as both a commemorative object and a work of decorative art. The medal serves not only as a reward but also as a material embodiment of the values and aspirations of the Dutch Hotelkeepers Association at the turn of the century, using its form to communicate prestige and cultural identity.
