Curatorial notes
Simon Vouet made this drawing of an angel with Saint Roch's leg using black chalk. Chalk is a humble material, yet in the hands of a skilled artist it can be used to create depth and volume. Notice how Vouet uses the chalk to create a range of values, from the darkest shadows to the lightest highlights. This gives the drawing a sense of three-dimensionality. The angel's soft, rounded features are rendered with delicate strokes, while the folds of the drapery are indicated with bolder lines. Drawings like this were often made in preparation for larger paintings or frescoes. They allowed the artist to work out the composition and details of the design before committing to the final work. The immediacy and directness of chalk allows us to witness the artist's hand at work. It's a reminder that even the most polished works of art begin with a simple idea, and a willingness to experiment with materials.
