Paulus Lauters created this print titled 'Visverkoopster' using steel engraving. The woman in the image stands framed by a window, a modern Madonna of the marketplace. The fish themselves are potent symbols. In the Christian tradition, the fish is an ancient symbol of abundance, faith, and Christ himself. Yet, here, they lie displayed for sale, divested of their sacred aura, transformed into mere commodities. We might recall the fish as a symbol in earlier Roman mosaics, where it represented spiritual nourishment, contrasting starkly with its mundane presentation here. This mirrors how ancient symbols resurface, their meanings shifting with cultural tides. What was once revered becomes commonplace, and the sacred turns profane. This interplay between the sacred and the everyday speaks to a deep, perhaps subconscious, tension within us. Do we long for a connection to the divine in the ordinary, or do we accept the disenchantment of modernity? This image captures that emotional struggle. The fish, stripped of its ancient significance, evokes a sense of loss. Yet, it also reflects the relentless march of progress and the ever-changing nature of symbols themselves.
