This silver cup honouring Jan Berewout Jan Lanckhorst was created by Jan Lanckhorst, circa 1742. The cool, reflective silver surface catches the eye, and the cup's elaborate design evokes a sense of grandeur. Its vertical structure is interrupted by horizontal elements at the base, midsection, and lid. The cup’s structure invites a reading through a semiotic lens, where each element serves as a signifier. The allegorical figure at the base, seemingly burdened, supports the cup, suggesting themes of labour and duty. Above, the cup’s body is adorned with images of maritime activity, these scenes are cultural codes representing maritime power and trade. The lid, crowned with another figure, perhaps symbolizes authority or achievement. In its entirety, the cup challenges fixed notions of value and honour, prompting us to consider the complex interplay between material wealth, social status, and artistic representation.

This cup contains references to war and peace. Stories from Classical antiquity are combined with the freestanding allegorical figures of Prudentia (prudence) and Mars (power). The showpiece was commissioned by one of the sixty Amsterdam civic guard companies. Its exceptionally splendid execution speaks volumes about the competition among the militia companies.
