Isaac Israels made this sketch of a seated nude, and looking at it, I immediately imagine him using fluid black ink. I feel such a kinship for Israels making this work, quickly, trying to capture a figure with the least amount of effort or fuss. It's all about the gesture, the weight of the body, and the shadow it makes. I can imagine Israels’ energy as he made it. See how he uses this monochrome palette to full effect to emphasize the contrast between light and shadow, describing not just the form, but the space around her. You can really feel the texture of the paper itself coming through. I love how artists are in this continuous dialogue, sharing ideas across time, inspiring one another's creativity, echoing and responding, almost like a big, ongoing, international telephone game. It shows how painting embraces ambiguity and uncertainty, inviting multiple interpretations and meaning over fixed readings.
