Alfred Freddy Krupa's "Along the coast of the Adriatic" presents us with a landscape rendered in swift, assured strokes of ink on paper. The composition divides into distinct registers, the upper showing long sweeping lines to a more densely worked lower portion. This arrangement isn't simply representational. The broad, gestural marks and high contrast challenges our perception, pushing us to reconcile the starkness of abstraction with the implied natural forms. The ink’s texture, varying from deep blacks to diluted greys, animates the surface, suggesting movement and atmospheric depth. There's a semiotic tension at play. The work flirts with traditional landscape, yet the abstraction asks us to decode its forms. Is it a cloud formation, the sea, or something else? The answer, perhaps, lies in the dynamic interplay between what is shown and what is suggested, inviting contemplation of the sea's essence rather than its literal depiction.
