Editor: Right, next up, we have "Apodictische Waaren, allegorie op de filosofie van Kant" a watercolor painting by Jacob Smies, made sometime between 1774 and 1833. It feels… chaotic! So much going on in this shop. What’s your take? Curator: Chaos is one way to put it. To me, it feels like a visual puzzle, like trying to untangle a knot of philosophical ideas. Notice how Smies fills the space, almost claustrophobically so, with symbols related to Kantian philosophy—categories of understanding, the separation of appearance and reality, the importance of reason… It's an allegory! It is as if he were attempting to capture the dense layers of Kant's system, almost ironically, with humour! Don’t you find a playfulness in the way it pokes fun at abstract intellectual ideas? Editor: I do see that now. I was too caught up in the crowd of figures to notice the specific symbols. The skeleton playing with concepts really underscores that humor, right? Almost mocking serious philosophical debate? Curator: Exactly. The whole print could be considered Smies’ subjective "take" on intellectualism! Is Smies embracing Kant, questioning him or, perhaps even alluding to a need for humor amidst heavy philosophy? What did you pick up? Editor: Well, it definitely shows me that art can be so much more than just pretty pictures. It can hold ideas and arguments. I might need to do a bit more research on Kant! Curator: And that’s the beauty of it, isn't it? The artwork nudges you toward further inquiry, a deeper exploration! We began by recognizing its crowded chaotic nature, but that chaos guided you to consider humor in philosophy...
