George Joji Miyasaki made this artwork, called The Flying Machine, using muted browns, blacks, and grays. It feels as though the image has emerged from the depths of the earth. I can imagine Miyasaki building up layers of paint, scraping away, adding more, a constant back and forth. I can almost feel the texture, rough and uneven, with those striated marks and blurred lines. The colour palette suggests something ancient, like a weathered stone tablet with symbols from a forgotten language. The black markings feel like a code. Does it represent a flying machine, or is it a metaphor for something else entirely? Those forms stacked vertically could be a landscape, or a face. Each mark feels deliberate yet spontaneous, a dance between control and chance. Like the work of other artists, Miyasaki’s painting engages in the act of seeing, thinking, and experiencing. It expresses something deep within him, an emotional resonance that vibrates on the surface.
