Window
Listen to curator's interpretation
Curatorial notes
Anna Chow Ying Wong's print, "Window", presents a compelling arrangement of geometric shapes and layered textures. The work is dominated by a palette of earth tones contrasted with cool blues and whites. The composition is structured around a large, solid block of brown, which creates a grounding effect. Above it, the central image resembles a window, framing an abstract landscape of trees rendered in intricate detail. This landscape is fractured into two rectangular areas of blue and teal which introduce depth and a sense of the outdoors, while simultaneously disrupting any clear reading of representational space. Below the brown block a series of numbers repeats along the base of the print suggesting a coded message, or system, which the viewer is left to decipher. The use of the window motif can be interpreted as a metaphor for how we perceive and categorize the world. Wong challenges us to consider how we frame and understand our environment.
