Curatorial notes
This caddy spoon of unknown date was created by F. & Co., and features a silver bowl connected to a wooden handle. The bright cut engraving on the silver bowl is a reminder of the elaborate rituals surrounding tea consumption. When tea was more expensive, tea caddies were often lockable, and the lady of the house would hold the key. This spoon was used to measure out the precious leaves, and reflects the value placed on tea, and the rituals of British tea culture. The wooden handle tells a story about the object, with wood being utilitarian and silver being luxurious. The creation of this spoon necessitated specialized skills, and the labor of silversmiths and woodworkers who possessed knowledge and expertise. By considering the materials, processes, and cultural context of this spoon, we can gain a deeper appreciation of the artistry and social meanings embedded within it.
