Sam Francis made this small painting, Blue Frame, with what looks like ink or very fluid paint. The making feels loose, like he's playing with how the ink moves across the surface. The painting has this central square, but what gets me are the splatters around it. They are not just decoration, they're part of the structure, almost like stars around a planet. Look closely at the bottom right. See that thick blue line extending from the square? It's like the square is leaking, or maybe like it's sending out a signal. That one mark changes everything. Francis often played with edges and centers in his work, and you see echoes of that here. Think about Helen Frankenthaler's soak-stain paintings and you get a sense of that same kind of experimental openness. There’s no right answer, just looking, and feeling.
