Curatorial notes

Nicolaes Berchem created “Man Herding Cows and Sheep” using pen and brown ink with gray wash. Berchem lived during the Dutch Golden Age, a period when the Netherlands saw an unprecedented flourishing of trade, science, and art. It was a period of relative religious and political freedom, which allowed for a diversity of artistic expression. Berchem, however, was particularly drawn to idealized pastoral scenes, often tinged with a romantic view of rural life. Here, we see that fascination played out in a composition where the figures are softened by light and shadow. The man, likely a shepherd, oversees his flock, a serene image that masks the socio-economic realities of agrarian life during the period. Berchem's landscapes often evoke a sense of nostalgia, presenting a harmonious vision of humanity and nature. This can be interpreted as a form of escapism. The artwork allows viewers to reflect on their relationship with nature and the idealized versions of rural life that have persisted through art history.
