Here we see "The Death of St. Joseph," an engraving by Robert van Audenaerde made sometime between the late 17th and early 18th century. The composition is built around the horizontal form of St. Joseph, contrasting the vertical figures of Mary and Jesus on either side of his deathbed. Audenaerde's use of line is striking. Notice how the density of etched lines creates tonal variations, giving form and volume to the figures and drapery. The parallel lines of the engraving tool articulate textures, from the soft fabric to the ethereal glow surrounding the holy figures. The work destabilizes traditional notions of death through its composition. The symmetry of the figures and the celestial light infusing the scene work together. It transforms a moment of loss into one of serene transcendence. The formal elements serve to elevate the scene beyond mere mortality, inviting contemplation on the spiritual implications of death.
