Simon Fokke's engraving presents us with the classical motif of the Three Graces, those embodiments of charm and beauty, cavorting in a dance with Cupid. In antiquity, these figures symbolized not only beauty but also generosity and reciprocity. The Graces appear here much as they did in Renaissance interpretations—often nude, embracing, a testament to the enduring fascination with classical ideals of beauty. Note how their dance echoes through time. It reminds me of Botticelli's figures, and even the works of Raphael, where the human form is celebrated for its aesthetic and emotional power. Above them, a figure in a chariot is pulled through the sky by cherubs. Banners stream off the chariot bearing inscriptions that act as mnemonics, to help us recall the scene’s meaning. In this, the motif is tied to memory itself. It illustrates the way images are recalled and revived in art. This emblem embodies the cyclical nature of symbols, constantly reborn through the collective psyche.
