Curatorial notes
Dankvart Dreyer sketched 'David Playing the Harp for Saul' with pencil and watercolour. Here we see David, the young musician, offering solace to King Saul through his music, a scene rich with symbolism. Music, the harp specifically, serves as a potent symbol of harmony and healing, its presence meant to soothe Saul's tormented spirit. Yet, this image strikes a deeper chord when considered alongside similar motifs across time. We see echoes of Orpheus, whose lyre charmed even the denizens of the underworld. Just as Orpheus sought to sway the fates with his melodies, David uses music as a balm, as a means to negotiate the troubled psyche of his king. These gestures become containers, charged with cultural memory. The act of musical offering evolves, retaining its core significance as a bridge between worlds, between minds. It is a testament to the enduring power of images, engaging us on a subconscious level.
