Pieter Oosterhuis captured this stereoscopic photograph, “Gezicht op de Keizersgracht in Amsterdam”, with the camera, immortalizing a slice of 19th-century Amsterdam. In the 1800’s, Amsterdam was a city of contrasts, experiencing rapid industrialization alongside deep social inequalities. Oosterhuis, working as a pioneering photographer, documented the changing urban landscape. In this image, the serene canal waters reflect the facades of the buildings, but what stories lie behind those walls? Who lived there, and what were their lives like? The rise of the middle class, the lives of the working class, the role of women in a patriarchal society – all of these histories are subtly present. As you look at the image, consider the emotional landscape it evokes: a quiet sense of bourgeois stability, but also a hint of the untold stories of the city’s inhabitants. How does this image invite us to reflect on the past and present?
