Gheorghe Petrascu made this oil painting called Workshop Interior (Blue Dress) sometime in the early 20th century. There's this red-hatted woman in a blue dress smack dab in the middle of what looks like a studio. You can almost feel the weight of the paint, thick and deliberate. Petrascu layers it on with such force that it gives everything a kind of sculptural presence. The brushstrokes are direct, confident, like he's building the scene right in front of us. I wonder if Petrascu saw her as a fellow artist in repose, taking a moment amidst the chaos of the studio, or perhaps she was just a model, caught in a moment of introspection. The subdued palette, punctuated by the flash of her red hat, gives the scene a quiet intensity. And it speaks to the kind of exchange that happens between artists—a shared visual language evolving over time. The painting has a kind of internal dialogue, maybe even an argument, and that’s what keeps it alive.
