This is "Onderzoekt de schriften / Oude Testament," a print by Gerhardus Philippus Zalsman made in the 19th century. It presents us with six scenes from the Old Testament, each framed in its own vignette, like windows into biblical narratives. The scenes use a subdued palette, yet the artist's command of composition draws our eye through each miniature drama. Notice how Zalsman employs diagonal lines to create a sense of movement and tension. For example, the fiery destruction of Sodom uses bright yellows and oranges that starkly contrast against the blacks and grays. Zalsman uses each scene as a tableau vivant, freezing a moment that encapsulates a larger story. The arrangement of these scenes encourages comparison, inviting us to reflect on themes of creation, sin, and redemption. It is a structured meditation on scripture, revealing the artist's interpretation and the cultural values he sought to reinforce through visual storytelling.
