Jules Laurens created this print, titled 'Job wordt bezocht door zijn vrienden,' at some point during his career as an Orientalist painter and photographer in nineteenth-century France. It depicts a scene from the Old Testament, in which Job, having lost everything, is visited by three friends. The image creates meaning through its visual codes, cultural references, and historical associations. The setting, architecture, and clothing all evoke a generalized “Orient,” a space of Biblical antiquity but also contemporary French colonialism. Laurens had travelled extensively in Turkey and the Middle East, and so had first-hand knowledge of the region. But the work does not directly critique the institutions of art or comment on the social structures of its own time. Instead, it brings a certain sense of realism to a very familiar and didactic religious tale.
