Frederika Henriëtte Broeksmit made this etching, Buiig weer, with ink and a printing plate. I love the frenetic energy, like a storm caught in a teacup. The lines are scratched and urgent, as if Broeksmit was trying to capture the very moment the wind whips up and the sea turns wild. You can almost feel the boat rocking, the sails straining. I imagine Broeksmit out there, squinting against the spray, trying to get it all down before the light changes or the storm passes. Maybe she was thinking about other artists who'd tried to capture the sea, like Turner, but wanting to do something rawer, more immediate. It's like she's saying, "Here's the sea, not as a pretty picture, but as a force of nature that gets under your skin." This piece reminds me that art isn't just about pretty pictures, it's about wrestling with the world, trying to make sense of it, and sharing that struggle with others.
