Paul Güssfeldt captured this photographic print of a Norwegian village. Güssfeldt was an alpinist, geographer and explorer, so it is tempting to see his photographs as documents of scientific expeditions. However, this staged composition gives us more than an objective view. Look at the arrangement of figures in national dress, posed against the backdrop of traditional wooden buildings and fishing boats. These constructed images participated in a broader cultural movement of national romanticism. This swept through Europe in the 19th century. It idealized rural life and celebrated local customs, but often overlooked the complexities of class and gender within these communities. Here, the photograph evokes a sense of timeless authenticity. But it also reminds us how identity is often consciously crafted and presented. It also reflects the photographer's perspective as an outsider. The image resonates with longing for a simpler, perhaps imagined past.
