Johannes Kragh made this sculpture of painter Joakim Skovgaard, but the date of its making remains a mystery! Can you imagine working so closely with a fellow artist? I wonder what it might have been like for Kragh to feel Skovgaard's gaze as he worked? There's something very intimate about making a portrait – trying to capture not just someone's likeness but also a sense of their character. Kragh has really focused on Skovgaard's face, using that incredible beard to lead us right there. The details in the beard feel very intentional, each strand carefully placed. And then there's the collar, thick with texture, contrasting with the smoothness of the face. It makes you think about the different ways we see and understand each other, and how artists, through their work, keep that conversation going. It is a beautiful rendering in bronze – the way it catches the light almost feels like Kragh is also painting with metal!
