This is the cover of "Notes on the pearl and chank fisheries and marine fauna of the Gulf of Manaar" by Edgar Thurston, printed in Madras in 1890. The composition is strikingly simple. The pale, aged paper is divided into two distinct fields: the right side dominated by neatly arranged, sober typography, and the left, a blank page marred by what appears to be water damage and handwritten annotations. This stark duality evokes an emotional response, a meditation on the nature of time and knowledge. The structured layout and carefully chosen fonts create a sense of order and scientific objectivity. The handwritten annotations and the damaged texture disrupt this order, introducing an element of chance. Thurston’s work engages with the semiotic interplay between text and its material support. The contrast reveals a tension between the desire for fixed meanings and the inevitable decay of all systems. Ultimately, the work challenges fixed meanings or engage with new ways of thinking about space, perception, power or representation.
