Curatorial notes

This is "Documenten uit het bezit van Paul Sandel," made with ink on paper by Paul Sandel, though we're unsure exactly when. It's a document, or rather, the trace of a document, that gestures towards a process of bureaucracy, of formal agreement. I'm drawn to the handwritten script, carefully inscribed, yet with a slight tremor that suggests the fallibility of the human hand. Look closely, and you'll see the ink isn't uniform, varying in density and saturation. This is not a smooth surface, but one built up through layers of time and administration. Each mark seems to carry its own weight, its own history. It reminds me that the paper itself has aged, becoming brittle. The fold in the center, with its annotations, suggests a story, perhaps a moment when someone folded and tucked it away for safekeeping. It brings to mind the work of Cy Twombly, particularly in the way it elevates writing to the level of art, inviting us to contemplate the materiality of language. Like Twombly, Sandel embraces the beauty of imperfection, reminding us that meaning is always fluid, always open to interpretation.
