This letter by Richard Nicolaüs Roland Holst, dated April 10, 1936, feels like a painting to me, composed with ink. You can almost see the artist hunched over the page, each word carefully placed, like a brushstroke building up the image. I imagine Holst, maybe a bit weary, his mind buzzing with thoughts on art, life, and the human condition. You know, the usual artist stuff. The light grey ink is so delicate, it almost whispers. Look at how the lines loop and swirl, each letter a tiny gesture, full of feeling. It reminds me of Cy Twombly's scribbled paintings, or maybe even some of Brice Marden's calligraphic works. Artists, we're all just talking to each other, across time and space, riffing on each other's ideas, you know? It's about this human need to make a mark, to leave something behind. This letter—it's Holst's mark.
