George Hendrik Breitner made *Billeting the Troops* with oil on canvas, using brushes in a flurry of gestural strokes. The rough handling of the paint gives the whole scene an unsettled quality. Breitner was very interested in the materiality of paint itself, and here he’s used it to create the atmosphere of everyday life. Look closely, and you’ll see how he’s captured the weight and texture of the soldiers’ uniforms, the nervous energy of the horses, and the weary resignation of the women. It’s all there in the brushwork – the way he drags the paint across the canvas, leaving trails of texture. This direct approach to painting speaks to the influence of photography on Breitner's work; the way he captures fleeting moments and everyday scenes. Breitner’s loose, expressive technique acknowledges the labor involved in painting and emphasizes the social realities of military occupation. By focusing on the ordinary lives disrupted by war, Breitner challenges conventional heroic depictions. The material and the making of the painting are key to understanding the social context.
