Curatorial notes

This etching, Jacht op een hazewindhond, was made in 1830 by an anonymous artist. It presents an idealized scene of the hunt, a pursuit of the leisured classes. Notice the greyhound, or "levrier hollandais" as the inscription states, leaping across a stream, elegantly bejeweled. In the background, three men take aim with their rifles. The clothing of the hunters suggests this is an activity for gentlemen. This image creates meaning through visual codes of class, where hunting is associated with status and power, while also referencing the historical association of the Dutch greyhound with the aristocracy. This artwork offers a glimpse into the social and cultural values of the Netherlands in the 19th century, and reveals how art can comment on the social structures of its time. To better understand this piece, we can consult historical records about hunting practices, fashion, and social hierarchies. After all, understanding art is always contingent on understanding its social and institutional context.
