Charles Garjian made this drawing of a wooden bucket, we don't know exactly when, but it captures something essential about seeing. The color palette is muted, just blues and browns, but they are applied with such care. Look at the vertical marks suggesting the planks of the bucket, and how they are never quite straight. Each one has its own wobble, its own personality. The light is soft, so the bucket seems to glow from within. You can almost feel the weight of the water it might hold. Garjian is a master of texture, and these elements shape our emotional experience. This drawing reminds me of the work of Giorgio Morandi, who also found endless fascination in simple, everyday objects. There's something so beautiful about finding the extraordinary in the ordinary. It's a reminder that art doesn't always have to be grand or complicated to be meaningful.
