Pierre Filloeul created this print of a dancing couple in the company of onlookers sometime in the first half of the 18th century. At this time, the court of France was considered the height of sophistication. The aristocracy’s patronage of the arts, performance of elaborate social rituals, and development of courtly love shaped cultural values across Europe. Here we see a couple performing an elegant dance, surrounded by other members of high society enjoying the performance in a garden. The poses and gestures of the figures, their elaborate costumes, and the ornate sculpture in the background all speak to the tastes of the French elite. The image celebrates the pleasures of the aristocracy, a social structure that would come under intense scrutiny in the coming decades. Historians would examine works such as this alongside court documents, fashion plates, and philosophical texts to better understand the context in which they were made.
