This artwork was painted by Gogi Khutsishvili, though its date remains unknown. At its heart, we see a dialogue between the body and the spirit, between the earthly and the transcendent. The figure raising their arms upwards is reminiscent of the ‘Orans’ gesture seen in early Christian art, symbolizing prayer and supplication. Yet, observe how this very gesture reappears in secular contexts, such as expressions of grief or ecstasy in later art movements. Consider also the nude female figure, an ancient symbol of fertility and life. Her presence echoes the Venus Pudica, a classical motif, yet here, she emerges, not as a goddess, but as a raw, visceral presence. It all speaks to the enduring human fascination with our bodies and souls, a cycle of symbolism and renewal. These motifs transcend their original contexts, and resurface, evolving and taking on new meanings.
