William Sidney Mount rendered this portrait of Martin Euclid Thompson in oil on canvas. The almost monochrome palette and the formality of his attire speak to the sobriety of the sitter and the epoch in which this painting was made. Yet it is the neckwear that fascinates me. The stark white against the dark coat draws our eye, a beacon of purity. We see echoes of this motif across time: the ruffs of the Elizabethan era, symbols of status and formality, or even the simple white collars of the Puritans, emblems of their spiritual devotion. White, of course, representing purity, the unsullied. The severe tone may reflect the psychological landscape of the time, a culture grappling with immense social and political change. In this portrait, the recurring image of white, from the sitter’s neckwear to the column behind him, represents themes of social class and moral purity. The echoes of these cultural artifacts resonate through the ages, an index of the human desire for meaning, identity, and permanence.
