Curatorial notes

Katsukawa Shun'ei created this woodblock print of Actor Arashi Ryūzō II in the role of Teraoka Heiemon. The actor’s figure dominates the vertical frame, a study in controlled geometric forms and restrained color. The actor's sturdy build is enveloped in a grey-blue kimono, its broad, simple planes punctuated by the sharp, vertical lines of a black under-robe. A striped shawl adds a layer of visual complexity, its diagonal lines contrasting with the dominant verticality. Notice how the artist uses color—the muted grey-blue against the striking red of the sword hilt—to draw your eye to key narrative elements. Shun'ei masterfully employs a semiotic system where color and line convey not just the actor's physical presence but also his emotional state, hinting at the inner turmoil of his character. Ultimately, this print is more than a portrait; it’s a structured composition where each element contributes to a larger discourse about identity, representation, and the performative nature of self.
