Leo Gestel made this untitled artwork of a horse with pen in ink. I imagine he was drawing fast, trying to capture the animal's essence, the way it holds itself, its spirit. The ink is thick, pooling in some areas and thin in others, creating a sense of depth and texture. Notice the bold strokes that define the horse's body and the more delicate lines that suggest movement. It's as if Gestel was thinking about all those other artists who've drawn horses – Stubbs, Delacroix, Picasso. There's a real sense of energy and playfulness, like he's not just representing a horse, but also exploring the act of drawing itself. It's all there in the gesture. Each artist is in conversation with the past, making something new out of what they've learned and seen. Painting, drawing – it's all about this ongoing exchange, this constant evolution of ideas.
