Sauce tureen c. 1822

This silver sauce tureen was crafted by Joseph Craddock, and though its date is unknown, its design speaks volumes. Note the prominent seashell motifs adorning its legs. The shell, a symbol resonating across epochs, carries profound significance. In antiquity, it was associated with Venus, goddess of love and beauty, born from the sea, thus linking the shell to fertility, and the feminine divine. But observe how this motif resurfaces, transformed, in later Christian art as the emblem of pilgrimage. The scallop shell became the symbol of Saint James the Great, his devotees wearing it as they journeyed to his shrine in Santiago de Compostela, signifying spiritual transformation. Here, the shell, once pagan, is now Christian, yet retains an essence of journey and rebirth.
