This drawing of a hat was made by Marie Famularo, sometime before 1975. I love the brown ink she used, it reminds me of sepia photographs and old-fashioned things. It is amazing how much detail there is in it. You can almost feel the texture of the hat's materials just by looking at the page. Famularo's fine lines follow the contours of the hat, wrapping it in a three-dimensional form. There are darker marks for the shadows, and lighter marks for the highlights. The more you look, the more you find! The blue ribbon almost pops out of the picture. And what about the ghostly hat outline underneath? Famularo shares a love of color and shape with the work of Elizabeth Murray, another artist who knew how to bring joy to an image. Each work is an ongoing conversation about colors, marks, forms, and the joy of looking.
