Curatorial notes
This is Francis Godolphin Osbourne Stuart’s photograph of St Paul’s Cathedral, captured in London during an era of immense social change. Stuart’s lens frames St. Paul’s as a stoic monument amidst the bustling life of Victorian London. We see horse-drawn carriages, the city’s lifeblood, juxtaposed against the rigid architectural lines of the cathedral. This was a time when London's identity was complex, a society deeply stratified by class, where the opulence of empire coexisted with stark poverty. The photograph captures this tension. The cathedral, a symbol of religious and imperial power, looms over the everyday lives of Londoners. Stuart invites us to reflect on the structures that shape our society and the individual stories unfolding beneath their shadows.
