Leo Gestel made this line drawing of Pegasus, flying in front of a cloud, with ink on paper. The magic of this piece really lies in its simplicity, doesn’t it? Just a few lines, but they manage to capture the lightness and freedom of Pegasus. Look at the way Gestel uses the ink, so direct and unfussy. There’s a real confidence in each stroke, like he’s not trying to overwork it, just letting the image emerge. I love the way the cloud is drawn, all these swirling, looping lines. It reminds me of Cy Twombly's scribbles, kind of chaotic but also full of energy. Then you have the horse itself, so elegant and poised, almost like it’s dancing through the sky. It’s like Gestel is showing us that art doesn’t always have to be complicated or detailed to be powerful. It makes me think about Picasso's line drawings. They both have this ability to convey so much with so little, capturing the essence of a subject in just a few strokes.
