This bracelet with coin pendants was created by an artist from Fon. Coin bracelets like this one have been worn for centuries across many cultures. They carry complex histories that speak to both personal identity and economic realities. Often, these bracelets are made of coins from different countries, reflecting trade routes, colonial histories, or the migration of people. Consider the stories these coins might tell, of changing values, political regimes, or cultural exchanges. The Fon artist who created this bracelet takes these themes and makes it their own. What does it mean to wear wealth? As adornment, does currency transcend its economic value? It is possible that for the wearer, this bracelet embodies protection, good fortune, or a connection to heritage. This bracelet asks us to reflect on the relationship between currency, identity, and personal expression.

More than one hundred years ago, the elite of the Danhomé Kingdom in West Africa would have worn these silver ornaments to adorn themselves and show off their wealth, and also to protect themselves from harm and evil. Fashioned by jewelers from imported silver coins, the ornaments were embellished with tiny sculptures that refer to past kings, heroic wars, and the Vodun religion. The coins attached to the ornaments date from between 1873 and 1910, bridging the last decades of the independent Kingdom and the first 15 years of French colonial rule.
