Curatorial notes

This is a photograph of Saint-Paul-Aurélien cathedral in Saint-Pol-de-Léon, probably made with a sepia process. I love the monochromatic feel, the whole thing is one shade of faded brown, but somehow there is still so much to see. The image, it's a surface and an invitation. The graininess of the photo softens the heavy stone structure, blurring its edges. The cathedral almost looks as if it’s emerging from the fog. The details of the architecture fade into the distance, becoming more and more ambiguous, dissolving. That ambiguity is what makes it interesting. You could say Delizy was influenced by Turner. Or maybe it’s just that the past always looks a little hazy, a little less defined. What is a photograph, if not a constant conversation across time and between artists? An exchange of ideas. In the end, art doesn’t give us all the answers, and that’s okay.
