This Brazier with Hydrangea Design was made by Kamisaka Sekka, who lived between 1866 and 1942. Look at how the hydrangeas are rendered with such a delicate touch. There's a sense of spontaneity, but also careful observation, a back and forth that feels very true to the experience of artmaking as a process. The cream-colored surface of the ceramic is activated by the organic forms of hydrangeas and other leaves. The mark-making is very delicate, and if you look closely, you can see how the paint has been applied in layers to create depth and texture. See the way the leaves intertwine? The way the blues and greens play against each other creates a harmonious feeling. Sekka's brazier has a kindred spirit with a painter like Bonnard. Both artists share a love for the everyday and an ability to transform it into something magical through their art. Art is an ongoing dialogue, and it's exciting to see how artists from different times and places can speak to each other.

This ceramic brazier is a relatively small, portable version used to heat water for serving tea in an iron tea pot. This piece, crafted by the master ceramicist Itō Tōzan II, is glazed with an understated natural tone and brings out Sekka’s fresh hydrangea and grass decoration.
