This untitled image by Arsen Savadov captures a monochrome scene of contrasts. It's like he's setting up a visual rhythm, a beat, using light and shadow as his drumsticks. Look at the texture, or lack of it, how the tones blend into each other in an almost uniform way. The figure in the image, poised with drum and sticks, seems caught between worlds, between performance and vulnerability. The high contrast enhances the feeling of a staged event, a raw and somewhat confrontational act. That starkness reminds me of Robert Mapplethorpe’s photography, where beauty and provocation collide, challenging our expectations of form and content.
