Editor: This is "Prophet or Evangelist placed to the right of an oculus" by Giulio Campi, dating back to around 1550-1560. It looks like it's pen, ink and pencil on paper. The figure feels quite monumental, despite the sketch-like quality. What's your take on this piece? Curator: It hits me right in the gut, you know? There's an urgency to those lines, a rawness that bypasses the formal perfection so prized during the Renaissance. Italian Renaissance, no less! This isn't your typical, polished depiction of a prophet; it's as if Campi captured a fleeting moment of divine inspiration or, dare I say, divine wrestling. Look at the way the shading evokes emotion, particularly the cross-hatching in the background: does it convey architectural space, or pent-up energy, perhaps? What do you make of it? Editor: I like what you said about divine wrestling – the way the figure strains… and those furious lines definitely do seem to vibrate. Curator: Absolutely! It's like Campi is peeling back layers to reveal the human struggle beneath the saintly facade. And think about the oculus—an opening to the heavens—placed just beside him, almost mockingly. Does it offer hope, or highlight the gulf between earthly struggle and heavenly ideal? He's almost claustrophobic in it. Perhaps that’s just my eye playing tricks. It's one of those drawings that stays with you, isn't it? Editor: It really is. I came in thinking "Renaissance drawing," but I see much more of a raw, emotional experience now. Thanks! Curator: The pleasure is all mine. Sometimes it takes fresh eyes to help an old dog see new tricks.
