Curatorial notes

These "Bidprentjes," or prayer cards, were created by Johann Peter Wolff using an etching technique. The composition consists of eight rectangular frames arranged in a grid, each depicting scenes from the life of Saint Thecla. Notice how Wolff employs repetition and symmetry, reinforcing the idea of a structured, ordered world. Each frame is carefully delineated, using sharp lines to define figures and settings. The limited color palette of earth tones creates a sense of sobriety, perhaps intended to evoke piety and devotion. The cards' structure reveals how religious narratives are often constructed through a combination of symbols, gestures, and settings. For instance, the halo consistently marks Saint Thecla, acting as a visual signifier of her saintly status. Together the cards invite us to reflect on how signs and symbols can influence our understanding and beliefs.
