Giuseppe Penone made this hand of bronze embracing a living tree, to show the ways that nature and humans are connected, almost like a dance. The hand, frozen in metal, still has so much warmth in the way it connects with the bark. The texture of the hand is incredible, you can almost feel the smoothness of the skin against the rough surface of the bark. Look at how the fingers seem to sink into the tree, a permanent mark left, a kind of sculpture where the process is about time and growth rather than clay or casting. Penone is like Arte Povera's slightly less grumpy cousin. He shares their love of humble materials but brings such an optimistic spin. It reminds me of what Eva Hesse did with latex – taking something industrial and finding the organic softness within. Art isn’t just about what you see, but about how it makes you feel, grow, and connect.
