This is Lester Breininger’s, ‘Peach still bank’ a glazed ceramic piece with no known creation date. The surface of this peach still bank is luscious, like sugary glaze. You can see the trace of process across the surface, in the drips and pooling of colour, with earthy oranges and greens melding to form an enticing surface. The earthy reds at the base of the vessel ground the piece, whilst the more vibrant yellows and greens draw the eye upwards. I love the way the glaze has been allowed to run, creating a fluid and dynamic surface. It reminds me of some of the work of Lucie Rie, who also embraced the inherent qualities of clay and glaze to create visually stunning and tactile objects. This object is a bank, so its value is both financial, and in its very existence as an artwork. Art invites us to see and feel the world in new ways.
