Alice Aycock's 'Sand-Fans' is an installation using sand, electric fans, and a gallery floor to transform a room into a kinetic landscape. I find that the simplicity of the materials is so compelling. The surface of the sand is so delicate, the fans create these ripples and waves. It’s like a topographic map, but one made of air and displacement. The whole thing vibrates. It's cool how something as mundane as a fan, when combined with a natural element like sand, can create a dynamic and unpredictable composition. When I see this, I think of Robert Smithson's earthworks, but with an added element of temporality and movement. Both artists share a fascination with entropy, though Aycock embraces a more playful and performative approach. Ultimately, it reminds us that art doesn't always have to be permanent or precious. It can be ephemeral, fluid, and constantly evolving.
