Caju e Bananas 

Aldemir Martins created this vibrant composition of 'Caju e Bananas’ using mosaic tiles. The artwork pulses with warmth, as seen by the colorful tessellations forming a still life of cashew fruit and bananas against a mosaic backdrop of yellows, greens, blues and whites. Martins’ choice of mosaic is intriguing. Each tile is a discrete unit, yet collectively, they cohere to form recognizable shapes. We could consider this piece through the lens of structuralism, where each tile functions as a signifier that gains meaning from its relationship to other signifiers within the system. The composition destabilizes traditional notions of depth and perspective. The mosaic flattens the space, pushing the foreground and background into a unified plane. In this sense, ‘Caju e Bananas’ transcends the conventional still life. It is less about mimetic representation and more about exploring the interplay of color and form. This invites us to question how art can deconstruct our perceptions of the familiar. The tiles, as individual entities, invite the viewer to consider how the artwork is continuously re-interpreted.
