Jean-Baptiste Corneille created "Landschap met man op drinkende ezel", or "Landscape with man on a drinking donkey", with etching. Corneille was born into a family of artists in Paris, and much of his work reflects his connection with classical subject matter. In this piece, the landscape becomes a stage for human and animal interaction. Corneille subtly hints at the social hierarchies of 17th-century France. The weary traveler, slumped over his donkey, perhaps speaks to the daily lives of the working class, their bodies worn by labor. Meanwhile, the distant castle reminds us of the privileged lives of the aristocracy. Corneille does not seem to judge or criticize. Instead, he invites us to consider the range of human experience within a single landscape, and how class and status shape our lives and identities. The image offers a quiet moment of reflection on the realities of human life and the structures that define it.
