This large painting is titled Estados Complementarios #014 by Pablo Rey, who was born in 1968. It's all bold marks and colors, mostly reds with greens, purples, yellows and blues floating on the surface. It's as if the painting came together through a long process of trying things out, almost like Rey was having a conversation with himself, adding layer upon layer, maybe even making mistakes along the way. You can sense his hand in the swirls and the blobs. I think it's so cool how the little gestures communicate feelings and ideas. It reminds me of Cy Twombly, but with a more playful vibe, like he is thinking of Miro. It's like all us painters are just riffing off each other across time. Each mark feels so personal, a little piece of his soul on the canvas. Painting is a form of talking, but not saying anything specific, and maybe, feeling is what it’s all about.
